Q. As a Meeting Planner,

What Gift Would You Like for the Holidays?

Profile By Bob Andelman

(Originally published in the Association Meetings, 1994)

Ann Hull
President
Meetingworks International
(Major client: Association of Junior Leagues International)
New York, NY
I would like every hotel salesperson and convention salesperson to have voice mail. That would be my gift to them. And I would like every hotel to pay attention to the specs I send them on a meeting before they send a contract out and have the contract reflect what has to happen at the meeting. I'd also like lots of new hotels with square meeting rooms as opposed to the long, narrow things we frequently end up with.

Elsie Ramos
Director of Administration/Convention Manager
Association for Advancement of Behavior Therapy
New York, NY
My wish? Lower room rates.

Francesco C. Leboffe
Vice President, Education & Convention Services
American Society of Association Executives
Washington, D.C.
I would like peace of mind for a couple days to go off and think about how to improve our industry. I'd like to worry not about current problems but long-range. Working 14- and 16-hour days, we put out fires today and tomorrow but never get to think about preventing fires in the first place.

Rande LaTour
Assistant to convention manager
American Veterinary Medical Association
Schaumburg, Illinois
Recognition. I think the meeting planning industry has not gotten the recognition it deserves. Because many, if not most of us are women, that's probably why the recognition is not there. That's the only thing that means anything. Well, that and higher salaried positions for meeting planners.

Christina E. Tzavellas
Manager, Meeting Planning
National Association of Purchasing Management
Tempe, AZ
Uniform hotel contracts at least within the same corporation. Obviously, I'm dreaming to think everyone would work off the same contract, but I wish hotels from the same chain would have the same contract. And that hotel chains not use "fill-in" form contracts from their corporate office that don't have their local name, address, phone and fax numbers on it. When you're doing 120 frickin' meetings a year, you don't know which Holiday Inn you're talking to!

Victoria Newman
Director of Convention & Meetings
American Hotel & Motel Association
Washington, D.C.
Perfect attendance at all functions. For the attendees to enjoy the complete experience we put such hard work into complete programs, we'd like them to enjoy it. So often, other priorities take them away. And I'd like a menu that every attendee enjoys. Because believe me, I hear about it.

Mary G. Ratchford
Manager of Board Activities
National Restaurant Association
Washington, D.C.
I would like to see industry people and hotel people get together and try, in some way, to make a difference in the lives of homeless and helpless people. We, of all people, have a means of helping. There's housing and food banks with a loving, concerted effort, if we band together, even if it's a small difference, it's a difference. Organizations can adopt a family instead of buying gifts for each other in the organization. Whether it be work clothes for the parents or toys for the child, we could make such a difference in the world.

Elizabeth Goulding
Director, Meetings & Expositions
National Association of College Stores
Oberlin, Ohio
I would like for centers to stop providing me with their own services, such as A/V, florist and guard services. I don't like those services being necessary for me to use, although it's becoming more and more prevalent because the centers need it for income. However, I have always chosen my own florist and guards. They have shown me they do the best job and I like to choose the people I work with. That would be a very nice gift.

Donna Ward
Director, Conventions & Industry Relations
American Urological Association
Baltimore, MD.
I'd like the hotels to institute an amenity for meeting planners whereby they offer to press your clothes when you arrive so you don't have to wait 100 years for an iron to arrive, or they should send them out to be dry-cleaned, so you don't look like you just arrived from a safari. I really don't care for the wrinkled look.
When I get to town, I'm bombarded with all these useless fruit and cheese baskets. Substitute the fruit baskets with dry-cleaning!
